Hungering for God’s Word
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God? – Psalms 42:1-2
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. – Matthew 5:6
Today’s prayer focus is to petition our Heavenly Father to stir up our hunger for His Word. When our primary affections in life become to seek the face of Christ through the Word, we are freed to walk in His grace, authority and power. Bottom line: the only way we are truly transformed is through the Spirit empowered Word of God. Even though we believers often know this intellectually, in this very fast-pasted, distraction rich culture, it is easy for our relationship with the Word of God to remain as a mere check list. Imprisoned by the check-list mentality, we maintain a theologically correct view of God yet our hearts remain far from him. We grasp the Bible on an intellectual level, gaining knowledge, yet such knowledge leaves us unmoved and unchanged. What we long for is to break free from such a religious mindset and awaken to the power of the Word to convict and challenge us so that we may be more perfectly conformed to Christ. In this place, truth comes by revelation and always produces change. It leaves us less sure of ourselves and more dependent on God. It is here that the joy of the Lord is our strength and a supernatural peace envelopes us; as our trust is no longer in ourselves but in the completion of the promises declared in Scripture.
Heavenly Father we long to hunger for your Word as a deer pants for water. Father, we so desperately need your grace to move beyond mere intellectualism to deep intimacy with the Holy Scriptures and Jesus, the Word made flesh. Father, break us of our self-confidence and grow us in our God-confidence. Confront us with your Word, change us, and set us free. Father, we recognize that your love motivates your Word to speak to our hearts and deliver us. Deliver us with your Word, excavate our souls of all wrong thinking, and lead us into the fullness of Your Spirit. Increase our joy and discipline to learn your ways and obey. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
