For God to reveal a new understanding of the authority he has given us as believers.
And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. – Luke 9: 1-2
Today’s prayer focus is to receive a true heart revelation of what it means to walk in the power and authority that Jesus gave to us his disciples, those who call him Lord.
As I read a passage of scripture like the one above, I don’t know if I am more humbled or more intimidated at times. My first thought is similar to that of David’s is Psalm 8:4, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” I think, man who am I to be used by the Creator of the Universe for his great purposes? This brings an overwhelming sense of humility when I realize that’s just it, all the things I think disqualify me from being used by the Creator of the Universe doesn’t deter God’s vast value and honor he places on me.
My second thought goes back to Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ ” and Psalm 115: 16 , “The heavens are the Lord‘s heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.” It reminds me how relational our God is. Despite having all authority and power, from the very beginning He gave himself boundaries so that He could partner with us to bring Jesus’s victory at the cross to all the Earth. Essentially, He says to us, “I am choosing to work through people when I break in and release My power. I will do it in cooperation and with the agreement of human beings.” Wow! What great privilege and great responsibility!
So what does this all really look like? Often times I think we as Christians can buy into a lie of the enemy, that says “Well if God is God, He will do this for me.” We are forgetting He gave us the power and authority to partner with him. Andrew Wommack describes it this way:
It’s like electricity. The power company generates the power and delivers it to your house. It’s not your power, but it’s under your control. You don’t call the power company and ask them to turn the lights on. No! They won’t do that. They generate the power, but it’s under your command. You simply flip the switch on the wall and command the power to work. Does this mean you are the power source? Certainly not! You can put a light bulb in your mouth, and it will never come on. You aren’t the power source, but you are the one in control of what that power does. You can plead with the power company all you want, but they won’t flip the switch for you. You have to assume your authority and acknowledge the power is under your command.
Perhaps there is an area in your life where you are standing by the light switch, wondering why God won’t turn on the light? Let’s pray God would raise our faith and understanding to reach out and turn it on!
Heavenly Father, we are humbled by your love for us and your infinite wisdom and trust of your people to give us power and authority in the earthly realm. Father, we desire to live in complete alignment with the fullness of your Word in Luke 9: 1-2, that you may work through us in power to bring your kingdom of Heaven to Earth to heal the sick and to remove the demonic strongholds that your son Jesus died to have victory over. We desire your goodness to be revealed to the ends of the Earth and your name glorified and marveled at for the magnificence that it is. Father, change us today, wake us up to this power you have implanted inside us. Encounter our small mindedness and release us into the full potential you have ordained in your Word. Amen.
