Day 2: A Reminder

Ecclesiastes 5:3 – For a dream comes through much activity.  And a fool’s voice is known for many words. You’ve made it one day! (Or maybe you haven’t. That’s OK too! today is day 1 then, let’s press forward!). Things are starting to get real. You might have a headache, and you might be pretty hungry. Let me encourage you to keep going!   Yesterday, Pastor Manny taught us about “The Proof of Pursuit”. I took a lot of notes, but I wanted to share a bit about one of his very first points.   If pursuit is the proof…

Preparation

This week, the week before the fast, we’ve started corporately praying together on a conference call line every morning at 6:45 am. This week, the theme of our prayer has been preparation. When I was younger I worked in restaurants. Part of my job before we opened the restaurant was called “prep”. This is where we looked at sales trends and based on that information we prepared food for that day. Sometimes it was cutting tomatoes or onions, sometimes it was filling cups of salad dressing. The truth is, if we slacked on the prep, the night shift would suffer.…

Four Types of Fasts

The goal of fasting is intimacy with God and clarity in hearing His voice. Biblical fasting always has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose; laying down the pleasures of earth to take up the pleasure of heaven. It also enables us to recognize the goodness of God and align our hearts with His. Your fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do. Complete Fast In this type of fast,…

Four Reasons to Fast

Jesus teaching on fasting in the same passage he gives instruction concerning giving and praying. Many of us have somehow understood that giving and praying are pretty consistent disciplines, but somewhere we thought fasting was for super christians or only in January. The teaching of Jesus implies that fasting should be a constant practice in our lives, much like giving and prayer are consistent practices. This shows us that it should be regularly incorporated into our lifestyle, not just in January. Fasting is not just eating healthy food, or not eating at all, or making yourself drink more water. Here are…

A Good Daniel Fast

One of the number one questions I get asked any time we’re about to enter a corporate fast is “Do I have to give up everything but water?!”  The quick and easy answer is, “No.”  But I do encourage everyone to push themselves, challenge themselves and see what God will do. Of course, if a complete water fast is not something you can do, you have options. There are many types of fasts, but the one that you are probably most familiar with is a Daniel Fast. Others reading this may want to begin this type of fast but just…

Have a Successful Fast

HOW TO BEGIN YOUR FAST How you begin and conduct your fast will largely determine your success. By following these seven basic steps to fasting, you will make your time with the Lord more meaningful and spiritually rewarding. STEP 1: SET A GOAL Why are you fasting? Is it for guidance, healing, renewal, reconciliation? Be specific. Ask Holy Spirit to lead and determine the objectives for your fast. This will enable you to pray strategically during the fast. STEP 2: MAKE YOUR COMMITMENT Pray about the fast you are doing. Jesus teaches that all of His followers should fast (Matthew…

When You Blow Your Fast

If you’ve ever partaken in any kind of fast, there’s a chance that you’ve also at one point or another blown it. Failed. Cheated. Made an excuse.  Whatever phrase you use, you know what I’m talking about. You set out to do one thing, and you ended up doing another. It’s important to understand that blowing a fast isn’t a sin. There’s no ritual you have to do. There’s no guilt you have to feel. Do not fall into condemnation! (Romans 8:1) We fast to draw closer to the Father; not so we fall into condemnation when we fail.  There’s…
